🌲 A Survivor's Field Guide to RP

Things I Wish Someone Told Me

Written by someone who was also new once.

First things first: This is all my own personal experience.

Everyone roleplays differently. There is no single "correct" way to RP your character, and some of the best moments come from people doing things completely differently than I would.

That being said...

I was new once too.

I said a lot of dumb things.

I had no idea what people meant when they said "meta."

I tried way too hard to avoid certain words and made things harder on myself.

So this isn't meant to tell you how to play. It's meant to help you avoid some of the awkward moments, confusion, and sometimes even deaths that come from saying the wrong thing to the wrong person.

Because RP has a funny relationship with rules.

"RP is encouraged, but not required."

That does not mean every RPer is going to ignore things that break immersion.

I once told someone:

"RP is not required, but that doesn't mean an RPer won't shoot you in the face if you don't."

And honestly? I think that sums it up pretty well.

You are allowed to play however you want. You can say whatever you want.

But your choices have consequences.

If you walk up to someone and ask:

"Hey, can you tell me about the server?"

Some people will laugh and answer you.

Some people will ask what you mean.

Some people will shoot you and move on.

Personally? I wouldn't shoot someone for it.

But someone else might.

Welcome to RP.

🧠 Understanding RP

01

The biggest thing to understand when starting RP is that you and your character are not the same person.

You know you are playing a game. Your character only knows the world they are living in.

🎭 Your Character Doesn't Know What You Know

Your character does not know:

  • There is a server restart.
  • Someone is lagging.
  • Discord is going crazy.
  • Your microphone broke.
  • Your computer is struggling.

But your character does know:

  • They are tired.
  • They get headaches.
  • They hear strange things.
  • People disappear.
  • Strange things happen in these lands.

The fun part of RP is finding the explanation your character believes.

👁️ Which Brings Us to "Meta"

You will hear this word a lot.

Meta is information you know as a player, but your character does not.

Someone tells you in Discord where a base is?

Your character doesn't know.

Someone posts a screenshot showing someone's location?

Your character doesn't know.

You watch a stream and see someone's secrets?

Your character doesn't know.

Ask yourself:

"Could my character reasonably learn this in the world?"

If yes, it may be okay.

If the only reason you know is because another player told you privately, probably not.

Everyone has different levels of comfort with this, and that's okay. Just remember that your knowledge and your character's knowledge are different things.

💀 Death and Dying

First thing to accept:

You will die.

Some people will talk to you.

Some people will rob you.

Some people will simply shoot you.

That is part of the world.

The tricky part comes afterward.

Someone asks:

"What happened?"

You have options:

  • "One minute I was fighting. The next, I woke up by the water."
  • "I had to see the doctor at the coast."

For me personally, I eventually stopped trying to avoid saying "I died" or "they killed me."

At first, I tried really hard to avoid it, and honestly? It made things harder. I was always fumbling around trying to explain something my character already experienced.

So I baked it into my character.

My character believes something is wrong with this place.

She believes she can die and wake up again back on the coast, wearing the same stupid jeans every time.

And honestly...

Isn't this place a little strange?

A place where you wake up after death and somehow keep going?

But that is just my character's explanation.

You do not have to use mine.

Some people believe they woke up at the coast.

Some believe doctors saved them.

Some believe this land is cursed.

Find what works for your character.

Respect the person. Tell the story.
